If you live in a place where rain is scarce, it’s still possible to have a beautiful garden. You just have to know which plants will do well in drought conditions.
Swipe through these seven slides to get ideas for drought-tolerant plants.
Lantana is a shrubby plant that produces rounded clusters of tiny flowers in a variety of colors. Like many plants, it needs regular waterings as it gets established, and then it is very drought-tolerant. Lantana is perennial, sometimes even evergreen, in the Southern United States.
Red yucca Is a fantastic plant for people with brown thumbs. You can simply plant it and forget it. The large pla nt has long, stiff yucca-like leaves and in the springtime, it produces very tall stems bearing coral or red tubular flowers. It can take extremely hot temperatures and can go for weeks without water.
Profuse daisy-like flowers on tall stems with long, droopy leaves characterize coneflower. This drought-tolerant clumping plant produces flowers in purple, yellow, white or red. The common-cold treatment echinacea comes from this plant.
For a true desert vibe, consider sotol, a plant with long serrated leaves emanating vertically from a central rosette. Native to Mexico and some parts of the Southern United States, it’s extremely drought-tolerant.
If you need a large shrubby plant in your landscape, consider upright rosemary, which tolerates long dry periods. Its leaves, of course, make a fragrant and flavorful addition to many recipes. Creeping rosemary—often used as a ground cover—is also drought-tolerant.
Add an unusual shade of silvery-gray to your garden with artemisia, a low-growing shrubby plant with aromatic, lacy leaves. This one prefers full sun and well-draining soil, and it rarely requires supplemental watering.

Oleander is a large upright shrub that produces long narrow leaves and clusters of pink, red or white flowers. Be warned, though, this drought-tolerant plant is toxic. It should not be ingested by people or pets, and those with sensitive skin should wear gloves when working with it.
