You have to wonder what people were thinking when certain home design styles became a trend. While some aspects of home design are truly timeless, others we’d be happy to send out the door pretty quickly.

At some point in the last few years, bland beige and white interiors became all the rage. White walls, white floors, white furniture. Blah, enough! Let’s bring some color back into our homes!
Farmhouse style — Ugh. So over it. Mason jars filled with old buttons, breadboards hung with rope from a towel rack in the dining room. Collections of white porcelain pitchers cluttering a beatup sideboard. Whitewashed window shutters hung INSIDE, as decoration. Let’s move on.

Speaking of farmhouse, can we ban those silly wooden signs with silly sayings on them? We know this is the kitchen; you don’t need to have a huge, whitewashed sign proclaiming it. We also know family is important—no need for a ridiculous sign telling us you love your kids.

We’re not saying white subway tile is all bad, but it might be time to think outside the box a bit. White subway tile everywhere shows a lack of imagination. Try broadening your tile horizons for something a little more, well, there.

Wallpaper on the ceiling? Yep, it was a thing, and it should go away. Deep colors on the ceiling can make a room feel small, and most experts recommend ceilings that are either white or the same color as the walls.

Open shelving is so over. It was, frankly, never a good idea. Who wants to dust their stemware every time they take it off the shelf to use? Who wants to see the cluttered mess of stacks of serving bowls? Exactly no one. Close ‘em up!
